In New York City for a MONTH!! The great gift of time and resources to do scholarship as a FRn Scholar in Residence (SIR)
While co-teaching a class on Black Protest Literature and Social Movements at Paine College, I had a chance to see some astounding transformations in my students as they melding the contemporary social issues into our study of student activism in the south. One key feature of this course was the integration of the school's legacy of activism (institutional and student-led) to address issues of race and segregation. Helping students unpack the genealogy of of social protest and reclaim the tools of the past led us to propose a project for the summer that was SELECTED!!! Check it out.
Boston Trip to ReSearch Frank Yerby in the Boston University's Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center-Continuing the Training of Paine College Yerby Scholars
I had the distinct honor of accompanying the Yerby Scholar Team to Boston University to visit the Gotlieb Archival Research Center to review manuscripts and personal documents Frank Yerby produced in his prolific career. As an alum of Paine College, Frank Yerby has published 33 novels, a host of short stories, protest literature, and poetry. Paine College has produced student scholars in Yerby's work for the last three years in preparation for various graduate programs with a recent graduate from the University of Kansas (Jameelah Jones).
Faculty Resource Network of NYC: The City as a teaching canvas-Athens, Greece; 1/2105
Through a membership with the Faculty Resource Network of NYU, faculty from small colleges like Paine get an opportunity for extensive development and exposure to innovative ways to take our research and instruction to another level. Although a competitive process, FRN provides opportunity to learn and see parts of the world I never thought a possibility for me. I was accepted to the Winter FRN session 'The City as a Teaching Canvas" in Athens, Greece to expand the use of contextualized learning in my classroom, research and through the development of other faculty members on my campus.
This was my first trip to Europe :) and I was very blessed to share some of these moments with my colleague Dr. Catherine L. Adams, the FRN liaison for Paine College (and fellow foodie). This adventure into the use of digital resources and community spaces has revolutionized my teaching approach and brought new resources (that are free or nearly free) to the work we do.
